Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is your cancellation/attendance policy?

Let’s TALK has a 24 hour cancellation policy. This allows us to provide make-up sessions/evaluations for another child if your child is unable to attend. Less than 24 hour notice will result in a $20 fee, and a no call, no show will result in a $40 fee. If you are able to reschedule for the same week, the cancellation fee is not applied. Let’s TALK does provide one “free pass” as we do understand emergencies happen such as sudden illness, death, or hospitalization. We will accommodate such extenuating circumstances, as long as they do not become a pattern. Our Goal at Let’s TALK is to provide the best care to you and your child, and we recognize that consistent attendance is crucial for your child to make progress towards his/her goals! If attendance is poor, we will do our best to work with you to find the best date/time on the ongoing schedule.

  • What happens if we miss a scheduled session or are on vacation?

Give our office a call or speak with your therapist. We will do our best to reschedule to make up for the missed session. If there are no dates/times available, we will see you at your next ongoing appointment the following week! We appreciate the advanced notice/communication.

  • Is an evaluation required prior to services beginning?

Yes, this is the “first step” in starting therapy. The evaluation process is crucial in order to learn more about your child’s unique skills, interests, and challenges and to determine an appropriate treatment plan. If you are unsure if an evaluation is warranted, we can start with a complimentary screening to learn more about your concerns.

  • Do I need a referral/script? Where do I send the referral/script?

All families using insurance or cash are required to obtain a physician's prescription before beginning therapy and are encouraged to discuss concerns with their Primary Care Physician/MD. All evaluations will be sent to your referring physician. Families or Physicians can email referrals/scripts to alyssa.shah@letstalkpediatrictherapy.com or fax to 224-788-7427. If you have further questions regarding referrals/scripts, please contact our office, and we'd be happy to help!

  • Can I drop my child off and come back when the session is over? What are pick up/drop off expectations?

Yes! We ask that you transition your child to and from our clinic. We are located in building two on the 6th floor in Suite 603 on the St. Alexius Hospital Campus. We kindly ask that you wait with your child until your therapist is ready for the session. We request that parents/adults arrive 5-10 minutes before the end of your child’s session to ensure the therapist has time to discuss your child’s progress and update you with any new information. To respect both families’ and therapists' valuable time, a late fee of $10 will be applied if the patient/caregiver is more than 10 minutes late for drop off/pick up. Therapists typically have back-to-back sessions; therefore, they are unable to wait as it takes away from another child’s session.

  • How long will my child need therapy?

There is no universal therapy timeline as each child meets their goals at a different pace. Therefore, the length of therapy is dependent on your child’s diagnosis and unique strengths/challenges. Let’s TALK’s evaluation reports/goals are typically written for a 12-month period with progress notes every 6-8 months to ensure children are progressing towards goals and new goals are created when necessary. Let’s Talk also honors our therapy graduates with a big celebration!

  • Can you work with my child if they receive therapy at school?

Most definitely! Outpatient services are separate from school services and children often benefit from both. It is not unusual for children to receive therapy in small groups at school or therapy for a short period of time. Outpatient speech therapy is beneficial to supplement or dive deeper into their goals in a one-on-one setting. We are happy to collaborate with your child’s school therapist to ensure carryover of skills and increase progress.

  • How often will my child come to therapy?

Every child is different; therefore, their plans are unique to their needs. Typically, children attend therapy 1-2 times a week. After the evaluation, your therapist will provide their clinical recommendations, and you will schedule with our Patient Care Coordinator. At that time, you will work together to find a recurring appointment day and time on the therapist's schedule (e.g., Mondays at 9:15am & Wednesdays at 11:00am).

  • Can I be present for my child’s session?

Parents are an essential link in what we do in therapy. Every child responds and performs differently with their parents. We welcome parents to sit in on therapy sessions to observe strategies, goals, & improve carryover, but we also understand that sometimes children behave and respond to therapy differently when their parent is present. If this is the case, parents may choose to come in for the first few sessions until rapport is built or pop in periodically, and then they can enjoy some well-deserved time to run an errand, complete work, or simply rest in the waiting room.
